Farewell gig for pop icons The Searchers as band heads for the Palace

THE Searchers are one of the few British pop groups who have maintained their position at the top for 56 years, writes Terry Medlicott

Now they have decided to hang up their instruments and retire in March 2019.

The news is not a massive surprise, as Frank Allen has not enjoyed the constant travelling while John McNally suffered a stroke last year and is an obvious concern for the band.

From their first Number 1 – Sweets for my Sweets – in 1963, knocking The Beatles off the top spot, to their last release The Searchers have enjoyed success all over the world.

The line-up, which has changed several times over the year, is currently founder member John McNally together with Frank Allen, Spencer James and Scott Otterway.

However for residents in Redditch and surrounding areas there will be a last chance to see them live when they play The Palace Theatre for the last time on May 19.

Tickets for this historic concert are £22 from the box office in person or on 01527 65203 or book online at The Palace website.
