Artist Eric Watson brings white lion to life for Redditch Arts Circle

A WHITE lion was brought to life in the hands of talented artist Eric Watson at the latest meeting of Redditch Arts Circle.

Eric’s subject was ‘Animal Portaiture’ and using a selection of white pencils, some wax based and some water-soluble, on a background of black card he set to work.

Once a basic sketch had been prepared he explained how, using pencils of differing brightness, the work could proceed.

Further variation was obtained by changing the pressure on the pencil.

Most of his work is done with a sharp pencil point since the accurate rendering of skin and fur textures is important, only using the flat of the pencil for laying down an even tone.

He concluded his presentation by giving advice on accurate mark-making, and by answering questions from his appreciative audience.

The next meeting of the Arts Circle, which is supported by Redditch School of Art through Redditch Arts Council, will be at St. Luke’s Memorial Hall, Evesham Road, Headless Cross on Wednesday March 7 at 7.30pm when Graham Davies will give his presentation on ‘Caricatures’.
