Politicians brave the cold to raise awareness

POLITICIANS have been braving the cold to join in a social media stunt aimed at raising awareness of motor neurone disease.

Redditch Borough Council leader Bill Hartnett and Labour Parliamentary spokeswoman Rebecca Blake both faced up to the ice bucket challenge in aid of the MND Association.

Ms Blake, who had nominated Coun Hartnett to take part, gladly stepped up to pour the icy water over the leader outside the Town Hall on Monday (September 1).

He said: "The ice bucket challenge is a phenomenon which has taken over the country. It's a very good cause so a couple of moments of chill is worth the thrill."

Coun Hartnett had the chance to get his own back later in the day as he helped Ms Blake complete the challenge of not one but 22 buckets - one for every person who made a donation.

She raised £120 ahead of the day and was also helped by Tesco who gave her the ice for her gruelling task.

"It was actually colder than I expected so I'm quite glad there weren't any more donations.

"I am pleased to have raised the money for a great cause.

"The challenge has raised some controversy about gimmicks and wasting water but MND alone have raised £4.5 million and a lot of people have done it for other charities too.

"It has certainly increased my awareness about the fact five people every day die of motor neurone disease, including my former neighbour's cousin who was only in her 30s.

"If this money can go towards eradicating it, it's well worth being a little bit cold."
