School changes review is approved

A REVIEW into the impact of proposed school changes on the town will be launched by Redditch Borough Council.

Coun Pat Witherspoon said she 'owed it to residents' to investigate how Tudor Grange Academy Redditch’s attempt to expand the school’s admission age and take pupils from the age of 11, would affect education in the town.

Speaking at an overview and scrutiny meeting on Wednesday (July 22), she said: "I believe we owe it to the people of Redditch to try and understand their concerns about what Tudor Grange is trying to do.

"I, as well as others councillors, have been inundated with messages from across the town and I think we have a responsibility to look into this and assess its wider impact on other schools and the community."

She added the academy's proposal was put forward in isolation of a wider review of the education system in Redditch, and if it went ahead it could contribute to a reduction in achievement levels and significant challenges to other schools in the area.

Although she recognised the borough council was not responsible for education she said she took her responsibility as a community leader very seriously and wanted the best solution for the people of the town.

The review would include working with Worcestershire County Council, school governors, Redditch Partnership and parents to assess how schooling arrangements in the town would be affected if Tudor Grange did introduce the changes.

But Councillors Roger Bennett and Andrew Brazier said they did not understand what councillors would achieve from the review in a short space of time.

Coun Brazier added the academy was now an independent business and did not have an obligation to work with local authorities.

The investigation will take a couple of months and a deadline will be set at the first meeting of the panel members who will carry out the review.
