A PAIR of Redditch schools got the royal seal of approval after they were officially opened by Princess Anne.

The Princess Royal visited RSA Arrow Vale and RSA Ipsley on Monday (July 14) where she unveiled plaques on both sites marking their conversion to academies.

During the visit she spent time chatting to students about their experiences and also met representatives from feeder schools and community groups which work with the two organisations.

RSA Arrow Vale student Demi Rutherford also presented Her Royal Highness with a piece of artwork she had produced called 'Autumn' as a memento of the occasion.

Bernadette Pettman, assistant principal at RSA Arrow Vale, said: "It was a huge honour for both academies. It is such a rare thing to come into contact with a member of the Royal Family and knowing Princess Anne personally decides where to visit and felt she wanted to come here is really important to us.

"She spoke to students at both academies about how different it felt now to then. She really took time to engage with everybody."

RSA Arrow Vale opened as an academy in 2012 and since then has made rapid progress becoming the first high school in Redditch to be rated outstanding by Ofsted. RSA Ipsley opened in 2013.

By being linked to the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce students benefit from access to experts in a wide range of fields and have already been involved in numerous projects including workshops with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
