Council Tax claim is a scam

BOGUS callers are targeting homeowners claiming they can cut their Council Tax bill.

Police have been alerted to the scam by residents in Wythall who had received calls from people advising they can offer a service to reduce Council Tax.

They ask if they can send a representative to visit the house to verify the person they are speaking with is the householder.

The calls appear genuine, and the caller could also have access to Council Tax band information and may know other personal details.

A spokeswoman from West Mercia Police urged people not to give any personal details out on the phone, by e-mail, or make any arrangements for home visits.

She added residents should not open the door to any cold callers and they could always ask for callers to post through Identity Cards.

PC Chris Bell said: "There are many scams around which involve unsuspecting members of the public receiving calls at home which they were not expecting. Often identity theft is the underlying aim and by giving out personal information it is all too easy to become a victim of this."

Anyone with a query about their Council Tax band should call the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 501 501.

Any incidents can be reported to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or anyone stating they will come to a residents home can be reported to police on 101.
