A HOME in Alvechurch has been hailed as a 'beacon of modern design' after scooping a national award.

The Drift in Rowney Green Lane was given the title of Best Individual New Home in the Local Authority Building Control awards West of England region.

Architect Andrea Millner was the genius behind the design and was praised by judges for the property's green conservation techniques while still delivering the 'wow' factor. There were 31 other homes in line for the title including another of the 49-year-old's designs at Woodgate in Redditch.

The Drift is the home of Ian and Sadie Dykes and their three children. Originally a 1970s four-bedroom house stood on the site and the family had planned just to extend it to create an extra bedroom. But after being advised the property could be demolished and replaced with a brand new home, they enlisted the help of Andrea to come up with a design from a picture Mrs Dykes had seen in a magazine.

The result is a distinctive oak-clad home with six en-suite bedrooms with an upstairs study, with vaulted ceilings and trusses of walnut and stainless steel.

Andrea said: "I do try to add the wow factor to all of the projects I work on – often vaulted ceilings and lots of light – but it always has to be in a way that helps a house to flow well and to work on a practical level."

Mrs Dykes added: "Our family home is magical – fantastic. And to know that it is also an award winner is wonderful."
