A UNIT at the Alexandra Hospital has been named after a popular ward manager.

Staff have dedicated an area of ward five to Gareth Marlow who passed away in July last year.

A plaque has also been installed at the entrance to a bay on the ward which will now be known as the Marlow Unit.

The 32-year-old lost his life after complications during a routine operation heart operation.

The nursing team as well as family members from as far as Scotland and Cornwall gathered together in a memorial event where his mother and her partner unveiled the plaque and officially opened the unit.

His mother Susan Hunter said: "Seeing this unit dedicated to Gareth is a very proud moment for me.

"He would have been very happy to know how inspired he made his colleagues feel.

"I am overwhelmed to see how important he was to everyone. "

Penny Venables, chief executive of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said Mr Marlow stepped up to the role of manager just two years after qualifying as a nurse and his passion for nursing and patient care lifted spirits on ward five.

"He was a real character, and is greatly missed by the team," she added.

"His compassion for patients, talent for mentoring and complete professionalism continue to inspire the nurses he worked with, and he will be remembered fondly.

"I am honoured to dedicate the Marlow Unit in Gareth’s memory.”
