Film aims to tackle stigma

REDUCING the stigma around mental health is the aim of students who are creating a film for fellow pupils.

A group of Year 10 students from Tudor Grange Academy Redditch have been working on the project which focuses on issues that impact young people.

Depression, self-harm and eating disorders are among the topics explored in the film and when finished, it will be shown to fellow students at the school to encourage them to talk about mental health, prevent stereotypes and also signpost people to support services in the area.

The idea was supported by the Young Health Champions (YHC), a project run by YMCA Worcestershire which aims to educate young people on different health issues.

Project co-ordinator Leanne Dance said: “The girls wanted to do something about mental health as it’s an area they all felt really passionate about as it effects lots of young people but often people don’t feel comfortable talking about it. Something they hope to change with this project.”

She added one of the Young Health Champions who has been working with the girls on the project had also suffered from mental health issues and now volunteered to prevent stigma.
