Noisy neighbours told to keep it down

BARKING dogs and loud music are the main reasons Redditch residents complain about their neighbours.

Redditch Borough Council is urging people to be more considerate of those around them and their actions as part of Noise Action Week.

Between April last year and the end of March the council dealt with 336 complaints about noise. Neighbouring Stratford District Council received almost 500 during the same period.

Steve Jorden, head of Worcestershire Regulatory Services, said: “We all make a certain amount of noise, and there are laws protecting us from serious issues, but clearly we have to live together with respect for those around us.”

Advice issued to residents includes keeping music volume and bass as low as possible and speakers away from party walls and on floors in flats.

If having a loud party warn neighbours in advance, do not let dogs bark unnecessarily or leave them on their own for long periods, and ensure burglar alarms have a 20 minute cut off. Councils have the power to force entry into a property and deactivate an alarm if it sounds for more than 20 minutes. It is also suggested DIY jobs are carried out during the day or at weekends.

Advice and support is available at www.worcsregservices.gov.uk or for residents in Alcester and Studley on 01789 260835.
