NO MATTER how many seats they win today, more seats will be won in future years by UKIP.

That was the pledge from acting party chairman Len Harris speaking to the Standard ahead of the announcement of the Redditch Borough Council election results.

He said they were a ‘political force to be reckoned with’ and were coming up with ‘solutions voters know they can trust’.

“We are quietly confident. There is no doubt this is a momentous moment in British political history. There is a new force emerging in British politics and whatever we achieve today we are going to be a big success, this is only the first wave of a great tsunami that’s coming.

“I am reluctant to put any numbers on it at the moment but I know we will have done well, far better than we’ve ever done before in Redditch.”

Council leader Bill Hartnett said he was confident Labour, who currently have 15 councillors compared to 14 Conservative seats, would retain control of the council.

“The Labour support was holding up yesterday very well through the rain and sunshine.

“UKIP have a strong showing in these elections. Whether that comes through in terms of seats who knows, they may win one or two seats.”

Despite some losses nationally, Conservative leader Juliet Brunner said she remained optimistic as Redditch always ‘bucks the trend nationally’.

“The results could certainly be very interesting. People have been very positive, they have seen the evidence of the economy going up and we’ve also had very interesting conversations about the referendum.”
