MP urges fairer funding for town schools

MORE must be done to ensure Redditch schools are fairly funded, Redditch’s MP has argued.

Karen Lumley spoke out about the issue during a Westminster Hall debate organised by Worcester MP Robin Walker.

The pair and their colleagues across the county have been campaigning for a number of years to get more funding for pupils, who currently get on average £4,028 compared to £4,388 nationally.

Pupils in the borough also receive at least £700 less than those in Birmingham. Last month Schools Minister David Laws announced funding would start to be allocated more fairly from April next year.

But Mrs Lumley said: “It has been a priority for many of us since we were elected to see the mess of education funding sorted out. I am pleased now we are starting to see real progress on the matter following the previous Government’s failure to act.

“Having studied the figures across the different local authorities, however, I am concerned Worcestershire is still not getting as good a deal as others, particularly given that some better-funded authorities stand to gain more from the proposals.”
