CRIES echoed throughout the streets of Alcester as the town played host to the Heart of England Town Criers competition.

The event, which has been held in the town for over 40 years, saw 14 town criers from across the country parade down the hight street on Saturday (April 19).

Alcester's Court Leet led a procession through the town to the historic Malt Mill Lane where bells were rung and each competitor voiced why they loved their town.

There was plenty to shout about as everyone battled it out for the official tittle and judges marked the competitors on dress, diction, inflection, volume and clarity.

Dennis Robinson, representing Sandbach in Cheshire, was crowned best dressed, while it was a tie for third place for Trevor Heeks from Trowbridge and Ken Knowles from Litchfield.

Paul Gough from Nuneaton called in second place and the official winner was Adrian Holmes, from Sandwell, with his tale about football, insanity and green open space.

It was the first time he had entered the competition after hearing about the event from others over the past few years.

Dave Parkes, Alcester's town crier and organiser of the event, said more people than usual turned out to watch.

"The day went really, really well and even though it was a bit cold we had the weather on our side."
