PLANS to extend a Webheath care home were halted by councillors after concerns over parking.

A proposal to build eight new bedrooms, a sitting room and laundry room at Haversham House, were deferred by councillors sitting on Redditch Borough Council’s planning committee last Wednesday (April 9).

The plans for the Bromsgrove Road care home, which included a flat green roof which would have grass and meadow flowers, were paused by councillors after issues around limited car parking spaces were raised.

One written objection stated people were already parking on the lawn area at the front of the property making it an 'eyesore' on the road, while another said there would be 24 beds in total which would mean at least 24 spaces would be needed plus staff parking.

Coun Joe Baker said 14 spaces was not adequate and he could not understand how the highways authority had approved it.

"You would have 24 bedrooms for residents, then staff parking would create another eight spaces, then you would need a couple of extra ones for care workers and visitors.

"You're looking at about 35 spaces."

He added he wanted more information about the category of the care home before he made a decision, which would tell him how many staff were needed on site at one given time.

But officers said the spaces proposed would be equivalent to one per three bedrooms which would meet standards.

Worcestershire Regulatory Service also had no objection to the plans.

Coun Michael Chalk added he was concerned the extension would be 'over-development' in a residential area.

Councillors voted to defer the plans so they could have more information about the home.

A decision should be made at the next planning committee meeting on Wednesday, May 14.
