Motorists stopped in police crackdown

ABOUT 30 motorists were stopped for anti-social and dangerous driving in Alcester over the Easter weekend.

Special motorcycle officers from Warwickshire Police pulled over drivers who were speeding, driving inappropriately or were causing a noise nuisance on the A46 on Saturday and Sunday (April 19 and 20).

A total of five people were cautioned for speeding, one vehicle was seized for no insurance, while the rest were given verbal warnings.

The crackdown comes as part of a scheme by the force as well as West Mercia Police and the Safer Roads Partnership to stop drivers from driving carelessly over the spring and summer months.

It follows calls from residents who were concerned about noise levels and people driving at high speeds.

Sgt Stuart Allen, from Warwickshire and West Mercia Police, said in the spring, summer and on nice weekends, the locations were always busy with bikers testing their skills and often racing up and down.

"There is an obvious road safety issue here which needs to be addressed for the safety of all road users and that’s why we launched this operation," he said.

Anna Higgins, from the Safer Roads Partnership, added it was encouraging to see the majority of motorists were adhering to the speed limit.

"However, we will continue with this initiative until the message gets through to the minority of motorists causing the problems that their activities will not be tolerated.

"It also demonstrates that the police and the Safer Roads Partnership listen to community concern and act upon it where necessary."
