A SENIOR police officer who began his career in Redditch is returning to his home force to become the new deputy chief constable of West Mercia Police.

Anthony Bangham will arrive in June from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, the force he joined in 2010 as assistant chief constable. He replaces former deputy chief constable Simon Chesterman who left West Mercia Police at the start of the year.

The 45-year-old was then a sergeant and inspector in rural and urban areas before going on to become chief inspector of community policing in Herefordshire.

Following his appointment as superintendent of operations in Hereford, Mr Bangham had various roles including working nationally with the Association of Chief Police Officers.

He was then promoted to chief superintendent in 2007 and became head of professional standards then moved on to head up the force's operations department.

"I am delighted to be returning to my home force and really excited about working with the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner in further improving the service to the public of West Mercia."

Chief Constable David Shaw added: "I am delighted to welcome him back. He brings a wealth of experience to the force and we are looking forward to working with him once again."
