Burglar steals from blind man

A HEARTLESS burglar stole money from an elderly blind man after sneaking into his home.

The thief called at the home of the 89-year-old from Batchley between 3pm and 5.15pm on Tuesday (April 15) and offered to cut his hedge.

He then asked if he could use his toilet before sneaking upstairs where he found the pensioner's wallet and stole £150. He then left without speaking to the man.

It was the second time the man had called at the address as he had approached him the previous day offering to cut the hedge.

The man is described as white, in his forties, about 5ft 7ins tall, slim to average build, with short brown hair and was wearing a light coloured short sleeve t-shirt.

Det Sgt Jill Fowler said the incident served as a reminder to people not to allow cold callers who knock on their door inside their home under any circumstances.

"The golden rule is not to let any stranger enter your home whatever reason or pretext they give. If they persist, close the door and call the police on 101 immediately, or if you feel threatened by someone’s behaviour, call 999."

Anyone with any information about the identity of the burglar or who may have spotted him should call Redditch Police Station on 101 or Crimstoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
