Heading north for charity

THE OWNER of a borough jewellery company will be battling against the elements in a bid to raise £100,000 for charity.

Steve Bennett, chief executive of The Genuine Gemstone Company based at Moons Moat, will be walking, skiing and sledging over 60 miles to reach the North Pole as part of a ten day expedition.

He will be joined by company worker Jake Thompson, former marine commander Alan Chambers, and retired GP Dr Phil Heywood, to take on temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees as well as the serious risk of polar bears, exhaustion and thinning ice.

A target of £100,000 has been set and funds will go to the Colourful Life Foundation which helps poverty stricken children in Birmingham as well as the National Osteoporosis Society which aims to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of fragile bones.

Mr Bennett said: “I have to be honest, the prospect of this challenge is very daunting. I know it’s going to be incredibly tough, but at the end of the day I’m not just doing it for myself.

“I’m doing it for two great causes that I believe passionately in which will hopefully be my motivator during my darkest moments.”
