YOUNG people across Redditch are being challenged to design a new scout badge to represent the town.

Redditch District Scouts are sending six of its members to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan next July and plan to present the badge as a gift to their host families. It will also be sold within the scouting community and to the public as a memento of Redditch's 50th anniversary of new town designation and help raise money towards the £19,000 cost of the trip.

The competition is open to children aged 16 and under and the badge design must include something representing Redditch's heritage such as a needle or a spring and a reference to the 50th anniversary.

The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges including Standard editor Ian Dipple, Coun Brandon Clayton and the scouts themselves.

Scout leader Danny Cochram said: "This will be something unique, a badge designed by the children of Redditch we can present as a gift to our host families."

Redditch MP Karen Lumley is also backing the contest and helped launch it in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre on Sunday (April 6).

"It is a fantastic opportunity to visit Japan for some of our young people and I wish them every success in their fund-raising."

Forms are available from the Standard office on Church Green East or visit http://redditchstandard.co.uk/v/docs/wsj-badge-project-layout-v1.pdf to download one.

Entries should be submitted to the Standard office no later than 5pm on Friday, May 16.

The competition is one of the 50 in 50 events as part of the So Redditch Festival, run by Redditch Town Centre Partnership, to mark the new town's 50th anniversary.
