THE SIGNING of a special pledge is set to take place on Monday (April 14) to mark the official start of Redditch’s 50th anniversary celebrations of new town designation.

Residents, community and business leaders are invited to join together at the bandstand on Church Green from 1pm for the signing of the pledge which has been specially created by members of Redditch Town Centre Partnership. It sets out a brief vision for the type of place Redditch should be up until 2064.

Prior to that there will be entertainment on the bandstand from the So Redditch brass band from 12pm.

The So Redditch programme of events continues tomorrow and Sunday (April 12 and 13) with a free living exhibition by Jestaminute Community Theatre Group at Forge Mill Needle Museum called One Back of Nineteen. The group has been recording the memories and experiences of those who worked in Redditch between 1939 and 1964 as part of a project funded by more than £28,000 of Heritage Lottery money.

It will feature a series of linked readings created from the oral testimonies gathered and delivered by community members including the U3A at 11.30am and 2pm each day.

There will also be a static exhibition between 10am and 4pm demonstrating how the stories were collected and featuring extracts of actual interviews as well as music from the period.
