Redditch man faces jail over street attack

A REDDITCH man has been warned he is going to jail after carrying out an attack outside a night club in which he knocked out his victim's teeth, leaving him permanently scarred.

Gavin Butters, of Aldington Close in Lodge Park, was granted bail at Warwick Crown Court while a pre-sentence report is prepared but Recorder Benjamin Gumpert said it was inevitable the 25-year-old would be spending some time behind bars.

Butters pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on Alexander Pitts during the incident in Stratford in September last year, but on the basis he was provoked.

However prosecutor Aliya Rashid denied that was the case pointing out in his statement Mr Pitts said: "We were walking together to go to the Kasbah and I was struck and went to the ground where I was repeatedly punched and kicked to the face."

As a result Mr Pitts lost his teeth, has been left permanently scarred and will require serious medical intervention.

Laura Culley, defending, asked for the case to be adjourned for a pre-sentence report and also pointed out Butters had a full-time job, although the judge pointed out that was likely to come to an end as a result of the proceedings.

But he said on the basis it would allow Butters to provide some compensation from his earnings up until the next hearing he would grant bail.

However Recorder Gumpert told Butters: "Unless something really unusual can be said on your behalf, you will almost inevitably be going to prison for this.

"Only a month before you committed this offence a period of suspension for a similar offence had come to an end. The near inevitable result is that you will be going to prison."
