A MODEL hot air balloon caused panic after fears it was a real one crash landing over Redditch.

Police received reports from residents in Batchley a hot air balloon was in distress over Pitcheroak Woods about 12pm today (Thursday).

More than 10 officers along with firefighters rushed to the scene and searched the area without success, while the force's helicopter also joined the hunt for the loose balloon.

But a call from a model owner who lives in Batchley revealed his imitation hot air balloon had broken free from its tether.

The balloon is described as having red, yellow and blue stripes and is the size of a small house or 4X4 car.

Police have now called off the search and the balloon is believed to have landed near Pitcheroak Golf Course.
