Bikers target of new police crackdown

MOTORCYCLISTS who drive in an anti-social or dangerous way are being targeted by police as part of a new campaign.

Specialists teams including motorcycle police, speed enforcement officers and the Operational Patrol and Collision Investigation units will be out in force around the A441 Alcester and Alvechurch Highways and the Evesham Road in Astwood Bank tomorrow (Saturday).

It marks the start of a campaign set to run throughout the spring and summer months to target motorcyclists who speed, ride inappropriately and cause a nuisance.

West Mercia Police and the Safer Roads Partnership are involved in the campaign which is in response to complaints from residents.

Sgt Stuart Allen, from the Operational Policing Unit, said at this time of year the roads concerned were always busy with bikers testing their skills and often racing up and down.

"There is an obvious road safety issue here which needs to be addressed for the safety of all road users and that’s why we are launching this operation. This action is also being taken in support of people living around the areas who have complained through their safer neighbourhood team or parish council about the noise and high speeds of the machines involved," he said.

"We intend to continue with this initiative until the message gets through to the minority of motorcyclists causing the problems that their activities will not be tolerated. It also demonstrates the police and the Safer Roads Partnership listen to community concern and act upon it where necessary."

Subsidised motorcycle skills courses are also being offered priced at £25 for a half day course and £50 for a full day.
