PLANS to introduce speed limits for mobility scooters in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre are a hoax it has been confirmed.

The Standard joined forces with bosses at the centre to compile the story as part of the the traditional April Fools' Day celebrations.

We reported a 2mph limit was being introduced from today for people on mobility scooters with security staff being equipped with speed guns to ensure the new rules were adhered to.

But general manager Ken Williams has confirmed that is definitely not the case.

It took some Standard readers just minutes to work out the story was an April Fool on our Facebook and Twitter feeds while others agreed with the idea and were disappointed it was not genuine.

April Fools' Day is widely celebrated across the world as a day people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other. Its origins are unclear but one possible suggestion is because in the Middle Ages New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns.

It has been suggested April Fools is celebrated because those who marked New Year's Day on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated it on other dates.

Happy April Fools' Day to all our readers. Join us on our Facebook page or tweet us and let us know the best April Fool you have ever been involved in.
