Clamping firm owner ordered to pay back thousands

THE OWNER of a Midlands clamping firm will pay more than £121,000 in compensation to hundreds of conned drivers.

Andrew Minshull of Hatfield Close in Matchborough handed over a total of £121,262 which will be distributed to 480 victims who were threatened into giving money to the Midland Parking Contracts firm after their vehicles were clamped.

Over the next few weeks each person will receive about 82 per cent of the money lost after Worcester Crown Court heard last May the 40-year-old had gained £311, 084 from his crime.

The matter first came to light in 2009 when West Mercia Police, Trading Standards and the Security Industry Authority launched an investigation after hundreds of motorists complained about the company.

Minshull, along with five of his employees, admitted conspiracy to defraud between January 2006 and September 2009 and he was handed a 32 month jail sentence in February 2012.

Following the case, staff from the Warwickshire and West Mercia Police Economic Crime Unit investigated Minshull’s finances in an attempt to recover money under the Proceeds of Crime Act and the judge granted a confiscation order for the full amount.

Mark Bancroft, a financial investigator with the Economic Crime Unit, said it was excellent news all those who suffered at the hands of Minshull’s company would be shortly receiving the bulk of their money back.

"Minshull’s firm netted hundreds of thousands of pounds by effectively demanding money after clamping or removing vehicles right across the Midlands.

"People who complained about the firm’s tactics were sometimes offered refunds, but in most cases did not get their money back, so we are delighted the confiscation order was granted and that the victims are now being substantially compensated for their loss."
