THE BEST of Redditch talent will be showcased at a special event which aims to hit back at claims the town is the least musical place in the UK.
A total of four borough bands are set to perform for free at Redditch United tomorrow (Saturday) as part of a drive to promote the town’s music scene.
The night, which kicks off from 7pm, includes headliners The Insomniacs as well as The Callout, Kill The Romantic and Guerrilla Monsoon who will all be playing a variety of punk rock and pop punk numbers.
The event, which is sponsored by clothing brand Weight of the World Apparel, is also linked with the town’s new music shop, Death and Glory Records, which works with up and coming artists within the town as well as students from NEW College.
Tom Watkins, lead singer of The Insomniacs, said the night was formed to silence claims made by researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London that Redditch has little musical talent.
As part of the study data from 94,000 people across the UK was analysed and found musical ability was linked to a person’s profession, education level and their average income. It rated the borough as the worst for musical talent in the UK.
“All bands strongly disagree with this. More needs to be done to recognise musical talent is out there, there is just no one looking for it,” he said.
