A CUT in the number of councillors representing Studley and Alcester has been approved.
The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published final recommendations which will slash the number of councillors on Stratford-on-Avon District Council from 53 to 36. The move could save £76,500 in councillor allowances alone with a reduction in postage and other costs adding to the final total.
The boundaries of electoral wards have also been redrawn and renamed which will split Studley into north and south sides with one becoming Studley with Mappleborough Green ward and the other Studley with Sambourne ward.
Alcester will also be divided in half, with Alcester South and West Ward representing 3,047 people including the parishes of Arrow with Weethly, Exhall, Temple Grafton, Wixford, Oversley Green and Alcester. The remaining 3,106 voters would be represented within an Alcester East Ward.
Currently Studley, Alcester and Sambourne are represented by seven councillors which will fall to four following the changes which come into effect from the 2015 local elections.
The announcement follows a ten week consultation on the proposals and a draft order to officially bring the changes into force will be laid in Parliament in the coming months.
Coun Hazel Wright, who represents Studley on the district council, said she supported the plan which the Liberal Democrats had pushed for as a way of cutting costs.
She added Studley, Sambourne and Mappleborough Green would still be adequately represented at parish, district and county level.
"I honestly feel with representation spread at these three levels there will be no deficit or loss of democratic rights. Representatives will remain easily accessible. Experience has taught me local councillors at all levels are good at getting issues to the right place and are very aware of what matters in the villages."
