A CHANCE meeting at a Beoley pub has led to 60 years of marriage for a borough couple.

Freda and Derrick Perkins met at The Village Inn, getting married on March 13, 1954 at Bromsgrove Registry Office when they were 23 and 22 respectively. They went on to have two sons - Paul and Nigel, a daughter Kay, three grandsons - Jake, Alexander and Lewis - and a granddaughter Phoebe.

Derrick originally came from Studley while Freda was born in Redditch and the pair have lived in their current home in Auxerre Avenue for 52 years, celebrating their anniversary there with family.

Commenting on the secret to a happy marriage, Derrick said: “Only having things that we could afford.

“When we got married we didn’t have a lot of money but if we couldn’t afford it we didn’t have it.”
