PEDAL power is in force at Walkwood Academy after work on a sustainable travel project earned pupils five free bikes.

Working with David Catterson from the Choose How You Move project, students completed a daily survey about how teachers and pupils travel to school, taking into account information such as the weather on that day.

The study showed very few of the children cycled to school so it became a focus for them. After planning numerous activities, they were informed they had qualified for the bikes, helmets and other safety gear.

Laura Monfordini, head of PE, said: “We are excited about how the bikes are going to be used and already within the first week of owning these fantastic bikes, a number of our pupils have undertaken a bike ability course.

“We are hoping this motivates the pupils to start using their bikes more, especially as the beautiful spring weather is on its way.”
