A TOWN centre business is aiming to become a showcase for musical talent in Redditch as it celebrates a year of trading.

Steve Evans, owner of Café Mambo@No 5, marks its one year anniversary on Sunday (March 23) with an evening for invited guests, and has set out plans to become a thriving live music venue over the next 12 months, to help boost Redditch's evening economy.

Café Mambo, located near the bandstand on Church Green East, was created out of the Pitch Your Plan scheme run by Redditch Town Centre Partnership which provided support to three entrepreneurs to fill empty units.

In its first 12 months the business has already established itself as an events venue with open mic nights, a psychic evening and live music performances but now Mr Evans is planning to build on that by linking up with Death or Glory Records in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre to promote the borough's young talent. It will also be one of the venues taking part in the Redditch Music Festival, part of the So Redditch Festival to celebrate the new town's 50th anniversary.

On the food side it has expanded its outside catering having secured contracts with a number of borough businesses and schools.

Mr Evans said he hoped to spread the word about Café Mambo over the coming months.

"I'm pleased with the amount of good feedback we've had and I think the town benefits from having us here, so I'd definitely do it again," he said.

"We really want to see the live music side of things take off now over the next 12 months."

Alexa Williams, town centre co-ordinator on the TCP, said: "We believe Café Mambo adds something unique to our town centre and look forward to more successful years to come."
