A PASSIONATE young musician has set-up a Facebook group to counter claims Redditch is the most musically unsophisticated town in the country.
Anil Kumar branded the research a ‘massive misrepresentation’ of the music scene in the borough.
The 18-year-old has been learning music for 13 years and includes the piano amongst the instruments he plays while he has also written some of his own material.
The Alcester Grammar School pupil told the Standard he created the group Unsung Talent of Redditch with the aim of giving a voice to musicians of all varieties and in a bid to get researchers to change their view.
“To be branded with something like this seems really inaccurate and disrespectful to all those who put a lot of time and investment into music in the town,” the Webheath resident said.
“There are hundreds and hundreds of clubs and societies ranging from folk to gospel to choirs to orchestras. We have The Palace Theatre, the bandstand, Morton Stanley Festival.
“When it comes to music Redditch is a very diverse town.”
The leader of Redditch Rock Choir, Christa Hugo, has also disputed the claim made by researchers.
“Rock Choir performed at Local Voices last summer at the Redditch bandstand alongside numerous other local choirs, and we were so impressed by the talent in the town,” she said.
“It’s no surprise to me those who live in more affluent areas such as Harrow, Islington and York scored higher in the tests. These families can afford expensive private music lessons and to attend concerts and the like. Those people without so much disposable income maybe don’t get to access this kind of thing so often and therefore perhaps it’s just musical confidence which is lacking, not ability.”
