THE FAMILY of a teenager who died in a Redditch river has paid tribute to the “fun, popular and outgoing lad.”

Richard Fellows, nicknamed Porky, drowned in the River Arrow near the Five Tunnels, on Sunday (March 16).

The 15-year-old Trinity High School pupil was swimming with two friends when he got into difficulties.

The two boys were rescued from the water and treated for minor injuries.

But emergency services had to search the water for the Brockhill teenager for about an hour before he was taken to Alexandra Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

A statement from his family said he was a fun, outgoing lad that typically never did as he was told and would be missed by everyone.

“A tragic accident has taken him away from us and we hope that others will learn from this. Treasure every moment like it is your last.

“We would like to thank everyone for their help and well wishes but we now ask for time and peace to grieve for our loss.”

A special memory book has been set up by Trinity High School pupils to record messages to the teenager and his family, while assemblies were held for all students.

Staff and educational psychologists have been made available to provide emotional support to students.

Headteacher Marian Barton said: “Richard was expected to do well in his GCSE examinations this summer and he was well liked by his fellow students.

“It is tragic that his young life has been taken in this way and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

A Facebook page has also been set up in memory of Richard and more than 1,520 people have already joined the RIP Richard James Fellows to pay tribute to the 'cheeky little chap' who knew 'how to keep a smile on everyone's face.'
