A WINYATES Green student is taking on the toughest assault course in the world after being inspired by his grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s.

Jason Gilbert has set himself four intense challenges over the next year in a bid to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society which supports those living with disease as well as their families and carers.

His grandmother, Sister Marie Celine, was diagnosed a few years ago and has sadly deteriorated over the last six months and now lives in a nursing home.

The 26-year-old, who studies Psychology at Coventry University, will be pushing himself to the limit in a 26.2 mile assault course on March 29 which involves heights, tight spaces, fire, water and electricity.

He will then plunge 300ft in a bunjee jump over Bray Lake in Windsor on June 21 as well climbing Ben Nevis mountain during the night in July.

Finally, the Illshaw Close resident has also ditched the booze for the entire year.

He said: “I’ve always wanted to climb Ben Nevis, so I knew that was going to be something I would have to do. My family have been really supportive, and I’m the first in the family to fund-raise, so it is a big deal.”

He added he had been training twice a day six times a week and said he could not imagine facing the tasks without friend Jamie Hodgkinson.
