A BATTLE to crown the king of the kings is taking place at a Redditch record shop to mark a special anniversary.

Ros Sidaway, owner of Vintage Trax in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, is organising the contest for Elvis Presley impersonators in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the release of the king of rock ‘n’ roll’s first recordings on Sun records.

Elvis recorded 24 songs at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, between 1953 and 1955 before leaving to join RCA. Ten tracks were released by Sun as his first five singles from July, 1954.

The contest is open to Elvis impersonators from Redditch and the wider area and takes place in the centre on Saturday, April 12.

Entrants will have around five minutes to perform to the crowd with a panel of judges deciding the winner who will receive an ‘award’ and a £25 Kingfisher voucher.

Mrs Sidaway said: “Elvis changed the sound of music forever which is why I couldn’t let this milestone pass without recognition.”

To enter email ros@vintagetrax.co.uk or pick up a registration form from the shop on Walford Walk.
