NEW life has been breathed into an area near the site of a historic orchard thanks to volunteers.

More than 30 people attended an event near Forge Mill Needle Museum to help plant the new orchard, near where evidence has been found of one dating back to 1645.

Volunteers included those from Where Next, St Stephen’s First School and Redditch Borough Council at the event organised by Transition Redditch and Abbeyside Friends with funding from The Co-operative Group’s community dividend fund.

Over 20 trees including apples, pears, plums and damsons were planted included varieties from Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

Martin Lewis, the council’s parks and green space development officer, said: “It’s a lovely peaceful spot for people and wildlife and this project aims to benefit both.

“Our thanks also go to Newgap Ltd Agricultural Contractors, who provide and manage the grazing of Bordesley Meadow with a herd of traditional English Longhorn cattle, who are going to improve gating of the orchard area free of charge.”
