A COMPANY director has been given back his life after his a pioneering bone preserving operation.

Redditch resident Paul Bitson was forced to walk with a stick on occasions and struggled to play football with his children after an old football injury started causing him bother.

The 49-year-old is now working his way back to full fitness after the operation, carried out at BMI Droitwich Spa Hospital by orthopaedic surgeon Nadim Aslam.

Before surgery, Paul’s right leg was bowed and scans showed he had advanced arthritis, making it likely he would need an artificial knee.

He said: “Since the operation, the pain has lessened dramatically and my leg has actually straightened again.

“I’m now walking the dog about two miles a day, which is great for both of us. I still attend physio sessions once a month and I’m still building up muscle bulk around the knee but it is fair to say things are going great and I really do feel I’m on the way to a full recovery.”

Mr Aslam added the operation was designed to straighten the leg which would make it easier to walk without pain.

“This involves fixing a plate inside the knee to effectively change the alignment of the leg from him being bowed to much straighter. The procedure has a 70 per cent satisfaction rate, 70 per cent pain relief and a 70 per cent ten year survival which means that there is a very good chance the need for a knee replacement can be delayed for ten years.”
