NEARLY 150 athletes made a splash as part of a gala day at the Abbey Stadium.

Special Olympics Redditch hosted 13 teams from around the Midlands, with 147 swimmers aged between seven and 70 taking part in over 80 races.

Medals were handed out by Redditch MP Karen Lumley - who is a patron of the charity - deputy mayor Pat Witherspoon, stadium manager Scott Brinkworth, council leader Bill Hartnett and county councillor Pattie Hill, who helped sponsor the event using her divisional funds.

Coun Bill Hartnett said: “It was a great event, I was able to speak to many of the coaches, parents/carers and swimmers who all said how impressed they were with the facilities at Redditch.

“It was a real joy to see everyone having a great time both watching and taking part in the gala and an honour to be asked to present some of the medals.”
