Man fined for benefits fraud

A MAN who carried on claiming benefits while working as a security guard has been fined.

Jack Barnard, of Gloucester Close in Enfield, pleaded guilty at Redditch Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (March 4) to dishonestly claiming more than £2,811 in housing and council tax benefit between August 2012 and January 2013.

The court was told the 27-year-old started work as a warehouse security guard in August 2012 but did not tell Redditch Borough Council. When an officer called to review his claim in January last year, Barnard said he had only started work in December, 2012. The case was referred for investigation where the truth was uncovered.

Barnard was fined £185, ordered to pay court costs of £85 and will have to repay the money fraudulently claimed through a compensation order.

A council spokeswoman said: "It is important for anyone claiming benefits to promptly and truthfully report changes in their circumstances so they do not get into trouble in the future."

To report suspicions of benefit fraud call the investigations team on 01527 534011.
