AN ALVECHURCH councillor has spoken about her battle with breast cancer.
Coun June Griffiths, who is also Bromsgrove District Council chairman, was diagnosed after going for a mammogram in November.
A friend of her daughter Sarah had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease and after going to get herself checked out, she suggested her mum should too.
With that on her mind and seeing a poster about breast cancer in her GP surgery, Coun Griffiths went for a test.
Despite having no symptoms, the results showed there were abnormalities.
A resulting biopsy then revealed she had breast cancer.
Coun Griffiths, who also had breast cancer 28 years ago, had an operation in January and has now been given the all clear. And she said it was lucky that it was caught early.
“In 12 months time it could have been a very different story,” she added.
Throughout everything she had been through, she said consultant Nick Purser and his team at the Princess of Wales Community Hospital were ‘absolutely marvellous’.
“The staff there were so reassuring - they are such a cosy group who give you all the help and support you need. The consultant even called up to see how I was - I cannot praise them enough for everything they did.”
