Conditional discharge for benefit fraud

AN OAKENSHAW benefits fraudster who falsely claimed more than £2,800 has been given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Attia Ghaffar from Lineholt Close pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming housing benefits and Job Seekers' Allowance at Redditch Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, February 19.

The 22-year-old applied for the benefits and did not declare she was self-employed between September 2011 and March 2012, claiming a total of £2,811.08.

Magistrates said the sentence was the end of an unpleasant occurrence in her life and she was given the punishment due to the fact that she had repaid all of the money and was of previous good character.

She was also ordered to pay £10 victim surcharge as well as court costs of £85.

A spokeswoman for Redditch Borough Council said this case demonstrated the importance of anyone claiming benefits declaring their true circumstances.

Anybody wishing to report their suspicions of benefit fraud should contact the investigations team on 01527 534011.
