MONEY has been raised to build and maintain four schools in Tanzania thanks to a record breaking effort by staff at a Redditch business.
Steve Bennett, founder of The Genuine Gemstone Company, and his staff cycled 17,579 miles in a month on a static bike based at their headquarters in Moons Moat.
The team raised a total of £85,522.99 as well as breaking the Guinness World Record for the most money raised by static cycling in one month.
The donations were given to the Colourful Life Foundation, which funds research-based projects delivering long-term sustainable benefits to communities through education, health and environmental.
They had originally decided to cycle 6,800 miles to cover the distance between the borough and Arusha in Tanzania, but after hitting their target early in the month they decided to carry on and see how far they could get.
In total, 284 staff took part with one team member achieving a grand total of 985 miles on the bike.
Mr Bennett said: “When we embarked on the challenge at midnight on New Year’s Day, 6,800 miles seemed out of the question.
“However it’s been so encouraging to see the team come together and raise money for such a good cause. I believe in strength in numbers and this just goes to show what can be achieved when you work together, especially for the greater good.”
