Cigarette butt lands woman with £400 bill

A COOKHILL woman has been ordered to pay more than £400 after failing to reveal who threw a cigarette from a car window.

Sarah Nunn, of Oak Tree Lane, was found guilty of failing to supply information when served with a notice at Worcester Magistrates' Court earlier this month.

The 30-year-old was asked to supply details of who was driving on September 4 last year, when a Wychavon District Council officer witnessed a woman throwing a cigarette butt from her car window on the A4088 Evesham Road, towards Alcester.

As the registered keeper of the vehicle, she was asked to supply the information so a fixed penalty notice of either £75 or £50 could be issued to them for littering.

But Nunn said she could not remember who it was as several people had access to the car and she would require a DNA test.

An official notice was then served asking for the driver's details and she was told by refusing to provide the information it would result in a summons to court for obstruction.

She supplied no further information and was ordered to pay £200 court costs, a fine of £200 and a victim surcharge of £20.

Smoking related littering costs Wychavon tax payer's £140,000 a year to clear and makes up 77 per cent of all littering in the district.

David Roberts, environmental crime enforcement officer for the council, said he was amazed smokers still ran the risk of being fined for throwing a cigarette butt out their car window rather than sticking it in the car’s ashtray.

"Rest assured, if we see you throwing your cigarette butt out of a car window or littering in any way in Wychavon, we will fine you and we will prosecute you if we have to."
