BUS FARES in Redditch are set to rise by 20p in response to council plans to slash service subsidies.
Stephen Haselden, group business development and strategy manager for Rotala which owns Diamond, said the changes which will come into effect on Sunday (February 23) had been made so the company can see if any of the routes at risk from the Worcestershire County Council proposals - which have yet to be confirmed - could be run commercially so they would continue if subsidy was removed or reduced.
He added the decision to increase fares had also been taken as they had remained the same, or in some cases fallen, since 2003.
As part of a raft of changes which Diamond applied to the Traffic Commissioner for permission to make, a 57A and 58A service will be reintroduced from the bus station to the Alexandra Hospital, which combined with the current 55/56 provision will mean eight services an hour will run to the Woodrow Drive site.
Mr Haselden said: “This is following my verbal commitment at various meetings to increase our services to the hospital.”
He added the fare changes would see ‘value’ routes removed and stops currently in that area moved into the ‘town’ area in a bid to simplify the fare structure.
Mobile ticketing will also be introduced on Monday (February 24) which means tickets can be purchased on a smart phone using a special app. Once it is downloaded and details are registered, passengers can buy their ticket using a debit or credit card and then the screen showed to the driver instead of paying using cash.
