THE MAYOR of Redditch is set to scale new heights as she bids to climb Ben Nevis.

Wanda King is undertaking the challenge with borough and county councillor Joe Baker in aid of her chosen charities The Primrose Hospice, Myeloma UK and Redditch Special Olympics.

It is estimated it will take the pair six to seven hours to walk the 4,409 feet to the summit.

Coun Baker has already climbed the Scottish mountain once when he was 20 but is relishing the challenge of reaching the top again.

“I thought this year we should do something that will gain some attention. I understand for many people in Redditch money is tight and we cannot always expect them to be handing money over unless we do something a little more daring,” he said.

“Ben Nevis is a really big challenge and I believe the two of us can give it a go after all the charities the mayor is supporting are very important as my own mother is undergoing the fight with cancer.”

Coun King said she was concerned about the climb as she had never done anything like it before.

“When Joe suggested to me we should do the climb I thought ‘oh no two by-elections are on the cards’ but I know I will be safe in Joe’s hands and trust he will not lead me astray, especially off the edge of a mountain.”

Grimm Brothers shoe shop, based off Hewell Road, are supporting the climb by donating and fitting the walking boots.

Shop manager Valerie Richardson said: “They are great charities and we already support the Primrose Hospice as staff have had family members use it, so when Joe asked we were more than happy to support the climb.”

About £700 has already been pledged to the cause and people can offer their support by handing in donations at Redditch Town Hall marked for the attention of the Mayor.
