BOROUGH chiefs pledged to talk more openly about mental health as part of a national awareness day.

Councillors and officers wrote pledge cards during the event at Redditch Town Hall, organised by Unison branch secretary Laney Walsh as part of Time To Talk day - a Time To Change campaign aimed at getting a million people to talk about mental health.

She told the Standard: “It went really well, it was probably more popular than I was even able to envisage. It was accepted really positively by all staff, councillors and the senior management team.”

Pledges included starting conversations with individuals who had mental health issues, campaigning for better services and raising awareness.

Council leader Bill Hartnett said: “Unfortunately there still seems to be a stigma attached to mental health issues and I firmly believe that it is time it disappeared. It is great that so many people got talking about the subject on Thursday and I know that the whole council is proud to support such a wonderful event.”
