Appeal could cost £145,000

AN APPEAL against the rejection of the building of hundreds of new homes in Alcester could cost Stratford-on-Avon District Council in the region of £145,000.

The estimated figure, revealed this week, could be billed to the council following an appeal by developers against the decision to reject plans for 160 homes off Allimore Lane submitted by developers J S Bloor and another 190 by Gallagher Estates, Pettifer Developments and Bloor Homes Ltd on a separate part of the site.

Both proposals were originally thrown out by councillors sitting on the West Area Planning Committee, despite planning officer’s recommendations to approve them.

The close proximity of the houses to the A435, the size and number of properties which were deemed ‘unsustainable’ and the detrimental impact of the size and density of the development on already oversubscribed community facilities, were among the reasons for refusal.

But the developers appealed against both decisions and the estimated cost of related legal advice is expected to be in the region of £145,000, as well as developers’ legal costs.

It is believed the appeals will be granted due to the council offering no evidence to defend the original decision.

Council leader Chris Saint said the appeal costs were currently maintained within budget, so there was no risk of an imminent rise in Council Tax.

He added provision had been made within the service budgets to reflect the appeals being fought this year and next.
