PUPILS at Birchensale Middle School commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day by planting a tree.

Children planted a plum tree in the school's garden to symbolise the lack of food six million Jewish people endured during Nazi occupation.

A tree will be planted every year to mark the occasion and it will provide a quiet place for contemplation and reflection where pupils can remember those who lost their lives.

The trees will form part of the school's Peace Garden which remembers the lives of past pupils and staff.

Melanie Vaughan, head of humanities, said it was important for younger students to keep the memory alive of those who suffered.
