A VICTORIAN violin left in an attic for more than six decades has helped raise hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity.

Retired vicar Donald Wrapson had kept the instrument - made in Germany in the 1860s - in his loft after his grandfather, who played it at parties, passed away in the 1950s.

But the Glebe Road resident decided to donate it to his neighbour Bryon Parish - a first violinist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra - who has been running marathons and half marathons to raise money for Bowel and Cancer Research.

It was valued, renovated and sold to Bryon’s fellow CBSO violinist Jane Wright, raising £370.

Rev Wrapson, a former hospital chaplain, said: “My biggest hope was that it could be played again in a big orchestra. It’s absolutely the right thing to happen. The quality of sound is wonderful and I’m thrilled to pieces – it’s singing after such a long silence.

“It’s a beautiful resurrection story and I’m so pleased it’s worked out.”
