DRIVERS in Alcester town centre will soon be forced to slow down.

A 20mph speed limit is set to be introduced on the High Street after county council chiefs gave the move the green-light.

Alcester county councillor Mike Gittus (pictured) said: “The work will improve road safety for all road users, because I know that slower speeds mean, less severe casualties in both pedestrians and road users.

“Apart from the road safety issue there is also a benefit to the pleasant shopping experience by reducing speeds and the additional opportunity of drivers and passengers absorbing the retail possibilities as they drive by.

“This scheme will also enable me to continue working towards the reinstatement of an ancient market place in the High Street of an ancient market town.”
