A TEENAGER has been warned he will face a 'substantial' prison sentence after being convicted of killing a Lakeside man.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury at Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday (January 28).

It follows a three week trial into the death of Nigel Shakespeare who died after being taken to hospital with head injuries, including a fractured skull, after an incident in Sillins Avenue on February 24, last year.

The 50-year-old, who was from Holloway Lane, was walking home with his partner from a night out at the Kings Arms pub when he was involved in an altercation with a group of youths.

An insult was directed towards him as he walked past the group and when he challenged the youths about it he was punched and knocked to the floor by one of them.

He hit the back of his head on the ground and lost consciousness before he was kicked in the head.

He was taken to the town’s Alexandra Hospital and then transferred to University Hospital Coventry where he died later that day.

The jury also found 18-year-old Adam Haylor, of Bushley Close in Woodrow, guilty of assault but cleared him of manslaughter.

Colin Mahon, also aged 18 and of Farm Road in Lakeside, was found not guilty of manslaughter. The trio had denied all the offences.

Judge Robert Juckes QC warned the 17-year-old youth and Haylor they were facing ‘substantial’ prison sentences before adjourning the case for sentencing on Monday, February 17.
